What a beautiful weekend we get to enjoy. When I went outside this morning and didn't get a chill, I knew I couldn't really care about anything today. I just wanted to enjoy myself. That's what I've been doing all day. I did a bit of watering, went for an outing with Dave to Costco and Lowes, then came home and started playing FreeCell. Since January 15, 2003, I've played 30,691 games. I have a 96% win rate. I keep track so I'll know when the brain starts having too many senior moments. So far Dave is winning that battle so that's a relief, but then he's two years older than me too. Just so we can feel young, we start our season of Silverwood this Sunday. You may recall that's where I get my stress test. This year the test will be done on the new rollercoaster that opens in July. If my heart quits, don't be sad. I went out having a wonderful time.

Hi,
Its not just the feds. Recently my daughter had a kidney stone and since it was late at night we were told to take her to the emergency room. We went to the hospital that participates in our HMO. They diagnosed her with a kidney stone, a fact we had already told them. After several hours they finally gave her a shot for the pain and sent us home. Later we got a billing statement for $18,000. Yep, that is a correct number. We were not responsible since it was covered by our insurance. About a month later, we got another bill from the physician for another $200. I called and informed them our insurance had paid the claim and since the hospital was an HMO contractor we should not have to pay anything but the copay. I was then informed that the physicians in the hospital are not members of the HMO. What? I guess next time we go to the emergency room we need to also take our own doctor. I thought you might enjoy this story. By the way we hit 101 degrees today.
Take care.

City Council News
5-15-08
Biggest news last night came from the public hearing that was held during the regular Hauser City Council Meeting. An ordinance was passed changing the council meeting dates. Effective in June, the regular council meeting will be the second Wednesday of the month and the workshop meeting will be on the fourth Wednesday. Also included in the ordinance was the P&Z long range planning meeting on the third Tuesday of every month. The planning and zoning commissioners have been holding this meeting for several years now, but the City of Hauser failed to pass an ordinance making the meeting legal.
The Council also ratified the contracts with Cheri Howell and attorneys Mason and Stricklin.

Yay, Spring is finally here!!! Next Wednesday, May 21st. should be a great time to learn about Lake A Syst....we will be starting the meeting at 6:30PM instead of 7PM so that we can hear a presentation by Jamie Davis who is the Lake A Syst Coordinator for Idaho. She will be giving an overview of the program and a few pointers...we plan to go to a local residence (one that's close to City Hall) so she can give us an idea of what we are going to be addressing. Should be very interesting.
After Jamie, we will have our regular meeting....probably around 7:30.
See you all there!
Medicare Prescription Drug plan at it's best
5-14-08
There must be a full moon. I don’t care if I look tonight and see a half moon; it’s still gonna be a full moon to me.
After our Blue Cross insurance would not cover one of Dave’s medicines this weekend, I started an interesting round of calls on Monday. Blue Cross took a day before calling me and telling me they can’t be of any help because the prescription part of Blue Cross isn’t Blue Cross at all, but is a company called Wellpoint instead. When I complained about not being informed of that, she said that on the card it shows a California address and I should have known that was Wellpoint. So I looked and sure enough, there is was as plain as day. It said Blue Cross of Idaho with an Oxnard, Ca. address. Now I really felt stupid for not knowing that was not really Blue Cross of Idaho. The lady gave me the number to Wellpoint since they are the company that can help me.
First call to Wellpoint yesterday ended up with an assurance that Dave isn’t covered by them. This morning I thought I would try again. This time Michelle told me that WalMart sent the prescription through two times and it was approved the first time but not the second. She told me to have them call her at a certain extension.
Walmart called and then called me back. There is no option to dial an extension and the person she got said there was no one by the name of Michelle working there. The person also told her that the drug was removed from the formulary and now needs prior authorization. "Formulary" is a word you learn when you get old and are on Medicare.
So I called WellPoint again and got Judith. Judith gave me her extension number and didn’t seem to care that there is no way to ask for or dial an extension. She explained that the medicine is no longer in the formulary and they didn’t need to notify us about it being dropped. I told her that my formulary says they do. Well she let me know that is what Blue Cross said, not Wellpoint. The medicine might still be covered with prior authorization. It’s up to the Wellpoint Committee. Judith agreed to FAX a prior authorization form to the doctor and asked if I knew the number. I told her I could call and get it and asked if she could hold. She said she would hold for 2 minutes. By this time I have lost all faith in the system. When I got back on line with the fax number, Judith was still there. Guess I made it in 2 minutes. Her time is valuable I’m sure.
So why am I telling you all this? I want you to be prepared because this is what happens when the Feds get involved in medical care. This is the Medicare Prescription plan that costs $30 a month. It’s really true that you get what you pay for.
5-13-08 Terry Leigh working on new water vault for routing water to feed the reservoir on east side of Hauser Lake. Work should be completed by next week. The water was off today for several hours, so people on the east side of the lake on Julia had very low water pressure during that time while the huge valve in the picture and vault were installed. When complete, water will then be diverted to fill the reservoir at the top of the rear chamber for better circulation within the reservoir.

I haven’t told you about Aunt Judy and Uncle Elmer for a long while. I kept waiting for things to get better but unfortunately they didn’t.
It appears that Uncle Elmer has had a couple of more strokes and he’ll never be able to move home. Aunt Judy doesn’t accept that diagnosis and has had some little strokes herself because of the ordeal.
Aunt Judy has always been my other mother. I wish I was there to help with her but all I can do is talk to her on the phone. Yesterday she managed a conversation for 1 hour and 15 minutes without crying. It’s nice that now she feels she can tell me all of her secret plans. You see she is going to lose her driver’s license. I heard all about how she didn’t need a license to drive if she only had her car. My smart cousin has left the car in Aunt Judy’s garage about 5 miles away. I probably should let Gigi know that she might want to remove the battery in case Aunt Judy takes up hitchhiking. At the end of our conversation she had even figured out that once she gets the car, she can go get Uncle Elmer and drive him to Hauser Lake, Idaho. It’s nice she has found happiness in making these secret plans. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that she doesn’t really do it. Do they put out Amber alerts for old people?
Some nice crappy thoughts

My gift to myself for Mother’s Day was to stay in bed until 10:30a.m. My very sweet husband had asked if I would like him to make me breakfast. I’m not much of a breakfast person, so I just told him that was such a nice thing to offer to do. I preferred trying to get bed sores while lying in bed with the dogs.
Tomorrow is the last day my services as a babysitter will be needed for three months. The kids will be having more sleepovers when their school is out so we will still be in contact. Abby took her test for kindergarten while her mother registered her last week. She somehow managed to recognize 13 letters and 7 numbers. They didn’t ask her about how to operate a computer and surf the web. I got a kick out of her telling me she was registered for kindergarten and then she got out the flash cards because now she’s ready to learn. She’s taken all the flash cards and work books home so she can play school with her sibs.
It’s a good thing the angels of Hauser cleaned out the outlet because our flooded park area is not drying up. Again, “Thanks so much.” You guys are really great. If I can ever help you out, let me know.

There I was, behaving myself at the City Council meeting last night, when Councilwoman Olita Johnston admonished me to not print something that had just been discussed. That was immediately followed by a stern scolding that she has heard about the CRAP I’ve been writing. That made me forget what I was not suppose to write about or you can bet I would just have to tell all of you. Actually, I remember that it wasn’t worth repeating anyway which is why her comment took me by surprise. As soon as the meeting was over, Duane Justus told me that he reads my crap all the time. I can’t help but love that guy.

New recall petition submitted
5-8-08
A new recall petition was turned into City Clerk Cheri Howell on Tuesday, May 5th. This petition was circulated by former mayor Gary Mallon instead of Ben Nelson.
The reasons for the recall stated in the petition read; Residents/taxpayers of Hauser elected Mayor Werst and City Council members to act on our behalf in our local government. We expect our Mayor to proceed legally and with Council consent when taking action such as; 1) Submitting a Local Disaster Emergency Declaration specifically stating “Adopted by the Council.” No record of Council action or approval exists. 2) Mayor Werst terminated the contract Code Administrator, without record of a Council vote of approval. 3) Mayor Werst does not include the public or Council in decisions to purchase furniture, improvements and other assets for City Hall. Legal processes and procedures can be tedious and at times difficult. These measures were designed to protect our rights and hold our elected officials accountable for their actions. Mayor Werst cannot disregard or make light of our rights and protections. As voters and residents of the City of Hauser we have the right to express our displeasure with the way Mayor Werst conducts City business and exercise our rights to protect our City and petition; that a special election therefore be called.

The little yellow motorcycle is working and has a license. Friend Mike Hansen came over and cleaned the carburetor. Mike is such a good friend. As I left the lake in my car this morning, I noticed someone else had picked up the garbage that had been tossed by people, hopefully not residents of our area.
The field trip today was to Crystal Gold Mine in Kellogg. We even got to pan for gold. The only gold I found was a paint chip, but I liked the crystals and amethyst better anyway because they were bigger. Since I thought the field trip was to tour a silver mine in Wallace, I was really pleasantly surprised. We toured a museum and they showed the kids what school desks long ago looked like. You guess it; it was like the desks we used when I was in school.
I have no idea who the crew was who did a second clean out of the outlet, but I’m super grateful and I know others are too. The stream is full and flowing rapidly now. THANKS SO MUCH.
It's field trip time

My number three grandson invited me to be a chaperone for his fourth grade field trip to a mine in Wallace tomorrow. I was able to go with grandson number one eight years ago and it was the best field trip ever. Both of my grandpas were lead miners in Oklahoma so I get some idea of what it was like for them. Dave got to go on the same trip with grandson number two so maybe he’ll also get to go with grandson number four in three years. This year we get to pan for gold and that’s something I’ve never done before.

News on recall petition
5-6-08
Tina McCoy notarized the signature of Ben Nelson on a recall petition submitted to City Clerk Cheri Howell in April. It was notarized on April 22. I was disappointed that the two mayors who preceded Mayor Werst and their wives signed the petition. Of all people, they should know that mistakes are made when it comes to following all of the laws involved in running a city. I quit the council a few years ago because certain people were deliberately breaking laws and I was afraid I would end up in jail. More than once I heard, “If no one complains about it, we can get away with it.” Mayor Peone and Treasurer Tina McCoy did not publish the quarterly budget report for a year. When asked about it, I was told it was to save money. That is just one example of many. Now they are getting folks up in arms about the new mayor who hasn’t been given a chance to do what he was elected to do.
It appears to me that the main reason the recall was initiated was the termination of Tina McCoy. That contention ran into legal problems when researched by the city attorney, Nancy Stricklin. You can read the letter written by the attorney to Tina McCoy here
According to the City Clerk a new petition has been circulated and may be turned into her today. This is not going to end. Now Ben and Tina are video taping all of the meetings. My advice to the Mayor and Council is to pay for an attorney to be at every meeting and don't do anything without calling the attorney first. That is obviously what the people who signed the petition want you to do. I'm guessing it would only cost about $3000 a month. Maybe they want the city to go broke so we can all be united under Kootenai County.

One of our most colorful and delightful residents of Hauser Lake has died. Estella Potter lived in the village when I moved here 30 years ago and I fell in love with her personality and honesty almost immediately. She had a stroke recently but seemed to be doing pretty good. How old was she? I don't know but I'm guessing she blessed our earth for around 80 years.
I told you so

That was fast action. I wrote about my motorcycle needing a battery and sure enough, Dave must have read the article cause we’re getting a new battery when we take Abby home today. I told you this website has been a good investment. Now do you believe me? I don’t have to nag my sweet hubby. I just write it on the website and I guess he doesn’t want me to write and tell you how I still can’t ride the cycle. We had a problem finding the key since I haven’t been able to ride it for many years because of a dead battery. So I took the lost key as a sign that I’m not suppose to ride two wheeled vehicles. After searching through every nook and cranny in the house, Dave found the key in his pocket. I’m almost on my way. Hopefully, I’m not so “fluffy” that the tires go flat.
I think winter is finally over
5-4-08
Sunday is suppose to be a day of rest and that’s what I’ve been doing. Oh, I did pay bills, did laundry, and mopped the kitchen, but didn’t break a sweat until I fixed dinner. That’s just one of the many reasons I hate cooking.
A couple of weeks ago I saw Jim and JoAnn Wallace picking up trash on Hauser Lake Road where we can enter and exit the lake. It makes me sick to see all the trash that people have been throwing out of their cars since then. Dave said he will buy my little motorcycle a battery so I can occasionally drive along the road and pick up some of the litter. Hopefully he hasn’t forgotten. Maybe I should send him an email reminding him in a few days.
Only one more early get up before NIC summer break. Then it’s three months before I start baby-sitting again. Princess Abby will get tested for kindergarten Wednesday when her mommy registers her. Abby is convinced that when she turns five in July, she will start kindergarten. She is going to start learning that life is full of disappointments.
Now, in case you have some leisure time, I have found a free game site where you construct a city. You can give it a try here.
Until 1796, there was a state in the United States called Franklin. Today it's known as Tennessee!

The youngest grandkids are spending the night since our Saturday soccer game doesn’t start until 11:30 in the morning. I don’t let them spend the night when there is a 9a.m. game since it’s all I can do to get myself ready and there on time. They’re pretty easy to have around now since they are all out of diapers and can help themselves for the most part.
I was really disappointed that the D.C. Madam hanged herself. Not only was it a terrible thing for her 74-year-old mother to deal with, we probably will never find out who all was on her lists since the judge sealed the records. It makes me wonder if the judge was one of the johns. Hopefully the D.C. Madam made copies of her records and gave them to someone before she committed suicide. The only thing I’m pretty certain of is that our Senator Larry Craig’s name or phone number won’t be on her records.
Krispie Kreme almost ruined my day
5-2-08
I traveled around with Dave yesterday while he bought food for last night's membership meeting for the Hauser Lake Water Association. There ended up being a lot of food left over since Marie and Bob Laverdure were the only ones who came. Guess that means the members of the board are not upsetting anyone too severely.
While at Costco, I walked around the Spokane store for exercise and to see what new stuff they have. It felt like I was in a time warp when I found ironing boards for sale. That must mean that there are actually people who still iron. I still have our first ironing board. It was purchased from the Volunteers of America Thrift Store for $1 in 1960. Not many years later they started making clothes that didn’t need ironing. And when they started making clothes out of 100% cotton again, I learned to like wrinkled clothes.
From Costco we headed to Krispie Kreme to buy dessert for the meeting. We were so excited when we saw the red neon light on announcing they were in the process of making donuts. And that means a free donut! So in we walked and a young girl asked if she could help us. We both said at the same time that we wanted our free donut. What? They stopped doing that? Triple bummer since they also quit making my favorite donut, chocolate iced, and Dave’s favorite, maple iced. I tried explaining to the young girl that it’s very hard for old people to get used to such drastic changes but she didn’t seem to buy that one and she certainly didn’t care that we were distressed. We bought other donuts and when we left, I let the young clerk know that we will still be back since we are definitely Krispie Kreme addicts.
HAUSER, ID -- Residents of a Hauser neighborhood were rushed out of their homes in the middle of the night when firefighters evacuated a community due to a nearby gas leak.
The gas leak came from a house under construction near the intersection of Waterford Loop and Hauser Lake Roads. Firefighters arrived on scene at around 3:15 a.m. Thursday and evacuated surrounding residents from their homes while they got the situation under control.
Avista employees were able to get the leak stopped and residents were allowed back into their homes by 5 a.m.
"This was called in, actually, by the newspaper delivery person," Hauser Fire Chief Larry Simms said. "He smelled gas and called 911 and got us en route."
The evacuation affected about a half dozen homeowners and their families. They were all brought out of the cold and into the fire station while Avista crews worked to shut off gas to the home where the leak was confirmed to be coming from.
I am writing this letter to express my full support for Hauser Mayor Don Werst. I have known Werst for several years and have come to appreciate his willingness to help others. I have watched him working on city equipment, plowing city streets and helping with office matters. It is very unfortunate that a very few here at Hauser think he is on some personal agenda of his own. When working in government you become a servant of the people for the people, and Werst is dedicated to fulfilling his obligations to the citizens of Hauser.
I previously was fortunate enough to be elected to City Council here at Hauser. I resigned after a little more than a year. The inappropriate behavior of some city officials was the reason. I am very pleased that Werst has made a decision to start fresh with his administration. It is past time for new ideas and personnel.
Werst will work to make Hauser the very best area to live that he can. He is totally willing to listen to the wants and needs of the residents in the area. It would be unfortunate if a few negative, narrow-minded people imposed their will over the vast majority who support the mayor. Don won the election in a landslide. That should say something.

Tidbits
It's April 30th, 12:25p.m., and it's snowing at Hauser Lake. I found out it was snowing in other towns too. Definitely my kind of snow. It doesn't stick to the ground or cause people to have wrecks.
I loved the article that Jim and JoAnn Wallace wrote in The Star about the recall effort of Mayor Don Werst started by Tina McCoy and her boyfriend and business partner Ben Nelson. Hopefully they'll write something for Hauser Thoughts too. Jim and JoAnn have been quite active in events at Hauser and JoAnn is the chairperson for Hauser Planning and Zoning. They are both involved in the Hauser Lake Watershed Coalition too. I mean it when I say they are nice people.
It wasn't a perfect day
4-29-08
Well laugh your head off cause I should have checked the weather forecast before making plans for the afternoon. I had on a sweater but not a coat, sandals but no socks, and the wind was blowing down on the prairie where it was also only 46 degrees. No playing outside today.
Abby wanted to go to a restaurant called Red Robin instead of McD's. We went along with her desires since I've heard a lot of good things about the restaurant. The place was very busy which is always a good sign. Abby ate part of her corn dog and Dave ate his bowl of chili. Then there was the fussy eater who wondered what all the fuss was about. I have three restaurants that I really like. Number one is G.W. Hunter's in Post Falls. Then comes number 2 & 3, McDonald's and Taco Bell. All of the rest of the fast and slow cook restaurants can fold and I wouldn't even notice.
The perfect day

Since we don’t pick up Princess PeeWee until noon today, it was the perfect morning to stay in bed. Maybe we should use our government rebate check for one of those Memory Foam mattresses at Costco. We would have enough left to buy a little laptop and we already have one. It makes me smile to just think about it. Maybe today will be the day I can try out the super slide. I haven’t opened the door so I don’t know if it’s cold out or if it has been raining. Come to think of it, since the giant slides are tubes, it doesn’t matter what the weather is. I’ll let you know how it went when we get home from our Tuesday outing with the Princess.
There are three sites that I visit everyday because money is donated to a good cause just because I click on a box. One is for Breast Cancer, another for Animal Rescue, and my favorite is Free Rice. On the Free Rice site you click on the answer that best defines the word that's showing. The more definitions you get the more grains of rice are donated. Just save these links so you can click on them everyday. Every click helps.

I found the best slide ever on Saturday. Zack’s soccer game was at a field on Howell Rd. about a block east of McGuire. At the end of the field is a tall contraption of three slides. Two of them are very long and twisty. Plus you can’t see a thing since the slides are tubes. I just might go over there with Abby before school is out so I can try it out myself without a bunch of kids watching to see if I will splat on the ground when I exit. My three youngest grandkids were as impressed as I was. If you get the chance, swing by with the kids and watch the fun.
Again I want to thank the guys who cleaned the outlet. Boy, would we have had flooding if they hadn’t done that. And I know it was hard works guys. Thanks bunches from all of us. I love you all and owe you a favor.
A couple of email hints
4-27-08
In case you have forgotten, I'm going to repeat a few things you should do when forwarding emails. First of all, check to make sure the email is true. It's pretty easy to check. Just bookmark snopes.com and check to see if what you're about to send to someone else is really just a hoax. Photos and email warnings are usually not true.
Rule number 2 is very important. When forwarding an email to someone, don't send it as an attachment. Instead click on forward. When you do that you can also do something that's very important. You can erase all of the addresses on the email and your friends also won't have to keep opening email until they finally get to what you are trying to send them.
Rule number 3 is also important. When sending something to more than one person, put the addresses in the the Bcc space, not the to or CC. If you can't see Bcc, then click view on your email program and see if it doesn't list it there. By doing this, your friends addresses cannot be stolen as they are passed around the internet by people who want to send spam or viruses.
Lynn Peterson makes the front page of The Press. You can read the article here.
Tom Inman sent a link to a site where you can report cell phone dead spots. Since most of Hauser is a dead zone you might want to let the folks know. Just click here.

Subject: Recall efforts
Thanks for the writings on the recall. Even though it does not directly affect me it is interesting to follow along. I am curious on a couple of things though. I think that you touched a sensitive spot or two with Ben. One question is why did the city hire Tina; pay her through a corporation that is being called another corporation. I don’t mean to make this sound bad about the city. Ben assures you he did not profit from the contract but the whole mess sounds like a shell game and tax right-offs to me. Just what is this Barcon Company that is doing million dollar contracts? I have never heard of them. Do they work for municipal governments or have other connections to need to be doing business with a small town city of Hauser?? I’m sure it is for tax purposes. Also another question I have is wasn’t Tina one of the founding members of the great and almighty Hauser code of building and development that pretty much restricted all new growth and building in Hauser city and impact area? The same code that says for every inch of impervious surface there must be two or more inches of runoff treatment area?? Or something of that nature. Then how is that your garage can be torn down and be gone for years then all the sudden a large tree tips in the night, damages your house, and your house is rebuilt slightly with more impervious surface and the garage reappears very much larger than the existing of years past? Anyways keep up the good work. I for one appreciat your efforts and the efforts of all those doing the right thing.
Thanks for the email Terry. I can only answer one of your questions. Tina McCoy had nothing to do with the writing of the comprehensive plan and code. You will have to ask former mayor Ed Peone about the contract. It was signed by Ed and Tina. D. J.
The Press has an article about the recall effort here.

Ben's response: Please share with me how you were able to obtain, complete, and submit a request for public information form (I'm sure you did complete and submit this form to our clerk) regarding payments to my firm and have a response inside of one day???? when our own council has requested information from the city clerk for months without so much as a syllable of response....And please understand that I personally did not benefit one penny from the code administration position...as that was contracted through barcon as an insurance measure to protect Tina McCoy and the city of Hauser...your notion of my being upset at the "loss of services" is laughable and absurd....my company builds multimillion dollar projects, we do not hustle small town governments for part time services.....you may also want to inform your readers of the years Tina McCoy volunteered her services to this community...I believe she has earned that courtesy......
D.J.'s response: It's nice to know that you are doing so well financially Ben. I hope your good fortune continues. I also hope you are not successful in your recall efforts, because there are some of us who feel that the next petition would be to disincorporate the City of Hauser. It would certainly settle a lot of the problems we have out here in our small community.

It is no secret the city of Hauser contracted with Barcon inc.(please note the spelling..."Barcon" not Barco) for the code administration position. It is also no secret that Tina McCoy is a corporate officer of Barcon..check with the city dj, and you will find that barcon issued to the city the proper W-9 tax form....all above board...one more correction for you...all checks were issued to Tina McCoy/Barcon inc. this was done at the insistence of council member Olita Johnson.. I find your subtle innuendo offensive and ask you in fairness to post this response on your site
D.J.'s response: The City started issuing checks to Suretrak Construction dba Barcon Inc on 12-13-06. The contract with Barcon Inc wasn't signed until March 14, 2007. Tina McCoy signed it as did Mayor Ed Peone. The last check to Suretrak was issued 9-5-07. In October, 2007, Councilmember Olita Johnston insisted future checks be made out to Tina McCoy and Barcon Inc.
I'm not an attorney and do not insinuate that anything was not done properly. However, since you are President of Barcon Inc., it does stand to reason that you would also benefit from the money paid to your company for services. Therefore, it would be understandable that you may be upset that your company no longer has a contract with the City of Hauser for consulting services.
Hmmm
4-3-08
In the Rathdrum Star article, Ben Nelson claims to be president of Barco Inc. Barco Inc is doing business as Suretrak Construction (See RCE 6970). Before Werst became Mayor, the City of Hauser wrote checks to Suretrak Construction at the request of Tina McCoy for her work with the City.

Ben Nelson finally got some more press about his personal vendetta against Mayor Werst and his effort to recall the newly elected Mayor of Hauser. There is a front page story in The Rathdrum Star today and Amy Canata has written a story for tomorrow's Prairie Voice in the Spokesman-Review. Remember, it takes one to know one.
